The oxygen sensor is installed in the exhaust pipe near the catalytic converter. On cars with six-cylinder engines, two oxygen sensors are installed.
Removal
1. Disconnect the electrical connector of the oxygen sensor, which is located on the bulkhead of the engine compartment. Remove the sensor wiring from the mounting brackets.
2. Raise the vehicle and secure it on stands.
3. Unscrew the oxygen sensor from the exhaust pipe. On cars with 1.8-I engines, you need to use the VW-3337 key to unscrew the oxygen sensor. If you do not have a special key to access the oxygen sensor, you need to remove the exhaust pipe.
Installation
1. Apply a thin coat of G5 grease to the oxygen sensor threads.
When installing a new oxygen sensor, grease is already applied to its threads.
2. Screw the oxygen sensor into the exhaust pipe and tighten it to 50 Nm.
3. Lower the car to the ground.
4. Connect the oxygen sensor electrical connector and secure the sensor wiring with clamps. Make sure that there is no contact between the oxygen sensor wiring and the exhaust pipe.
