Checking the radiator fan (VW Golf 2)

If the fan does not turn on, first check the thermal switch located on the left radiator tank.

Start the engine and let it run until the fan turns on. Open the expansion tank cap. Place a thermometer in the tank. The temperature should be between 93 and 98°C.

If the fan does not turn on, disconnect both wires from the thermal switch and short them together, turn on the ignition. The fan should start. If this does not happen, you need to replace the sensor and repeat the test. If this does not happen, you need to find out whether voltage is supplied to the thermal switch via one of the electrical wires and whether there is reliable contact with the "ground" of the other wire.
