2. Check whether the starter throws out the pinion gear when the battery is fully charged.
3. Set the gearbox to neutral position, turn off the ignition.
4. With the help of a wire (cross-section not less than 4 mm²) connect terminals 30 and 50 of the starter.
5. If the starter works properly, then the fault is in the wire to the starter. If the starter does not work, then it must be removed and checked. Check condition: the wire connections must be reliable and not oxidized.
Cause | Method of elimination |
The starter does not rotate when the ignition is turned on
| The battery is discharged | Charge the battery |
| Connect terminals 30 and 50: the starter works. Break in wire 50 to the ignition switch, the ignition switch is faulty | Fix the break. Replace faulty parts |
| Cable break or poor ground connection. Battery is discharged | Check battery cable and connections. Measure battery voltage, charge if necessary |
| Insufficient current due to loose or oxidized contacts | Clean the battery terminals and poles. Restore the reliability of the connections between the battery, starter and ground |
| No voltage at terminal 50 (magnetic relay) | Wire break. Ignition switch is faulty |
The starter turns too slowly and does not turn the engine over
| The battery is discharged | Charge the battery |
| The engine is filled with non-winter or non-all-season oil (in winter) | Change oil |
| Insufficient current conductivity due to loosening of contacts or their oxidation | Clean the starter terminals and poles. Tighten the connections |
| The graphite brushes do not fit the collector, are stuck in the guides, are worn out, broken, oily or dirty | Check, clean or replace the graphite brushes. Check the guides |
| Insufficient distance between the commutator and the graphite brushes | Replace the graphite brushes and clean their guides |
| Grooves on the manifold, carbon deposits or dirt | Turn the collector or replace the anchor |
| No voltage at terminal 50 (not less than 8V) | Check the ignition switch or magnetic relay |
| The bearing is broken | Check and replace bearing if necessary |
| Magnetic relay is faulty | Replace the relay |
The starter engages and spins, the engine does not spin or spins intermittently
| The gear drive is faulty | Replace the pinion drive |
| The gear is dirty | Clean the gear |
| The flywheel ring gear is faulty | Treat the ring gear if necessary, replace the flywheel |
The gear drive does not work
| The gear drive is dirty. The worm thread is dirty or faulty | Clean the drive, replace if necessary |
| Magnetic relay is faulty | Replace magnetic relay |
| The return spring is weak or broken | Replace the return spring |
The starter continues to rotate after the ignition is turned off
| Magnetic relay switch is stuck and does not turn off | Turn off ignition immediately. Replace magnetic relay |
| The ignition switch does not turn off | Disconnect the battery immediately. Replace the ignition switch |
