Generator switching circuit
Location of the 4-cylinder V-ribbed belt
1. Generator; 2. Bypass roller; 3. Air conditioner compressor; 4. Power steering pump; 5. Crankshaft; 6. Bypass roller; 7. Tension roller; 8. V-belt
Instead of an air conditioning compressor, a second generator can be installed.
Removing
1. Switch off the ignition.
2. Disconnect ground cable (-) from the battery.
Attention! After disconnecting the battery, the memory of the radio receiver and electronic control units is erased. If the radio is coded, memorize the radio code before disconnecting the battery. Without the code, after connecting the battery, the radio will not work.
3. If equipped, disconnect the air hose at the rear of the generator.
4. Remove the protective cap, disconnect the thick wire (IN) and thin (D) (see fig. Generator switching circuit) from contacts (1) And (2).
5. 4-cylinder petrol engine: Loosen the screws from the alternator bracket. To do this, insert a 6 mm Allen key from the front into the hole in the toothed belt guard and unscrew the screws.
6. 5-cylinder engines and 4-cylinder diesel engine: Loosen the screws on the alternator bracket.
7. Loosen and remove the V-belt.
V-Belt Machines
8. Belt drive with tensioner pulley: lift the idler pulley using the VW 3299 lever or a pry bar, loosen the v-ribbed toothed belt and remove it from the alternator pulley.
9. Belt drive without idler pulley: press the alternator down using the VW-3297 lever or pry bar, loosen the v-ribbed toothed belt and remove it from the alternator belt pulley.
Attention! Bracket screws (1, 2) must be loosened by at least 1 turn.
10. Unscrew the generator bracket screws and remove the generator.
Installation
1. Install the alternator, screw to the bracket, but do not tighten.
2. If present, install tension screw.
3. Check V-belt wear (see fig. Location of the 4-cylinder V-ribbed belt), replace if necessary.
4. Put on and pull the V-belt, toothed belt on the alternator pulley.
5. Tighten the bracket tension screws. Tightening torques: up to 9/92 - 35 Nm. Bracket screws: 4-cylinder diesel engine: 50 Nm. C 10/92 - 25 Nm.
6. Connect the electrical wiring to the generator.
7. Connect ground cable (-) to the battery.
Attention! Connect the battery only with the ignition off, otherwise the injection system control unit will fail.
8. Set clock time.
9. Enter the anti-theft code into the radio.
