Verification conditions
The gearbox must not operate in emergency mode, the ATF temperature should not exceed 30°C.
The car must be in a horizontal position.
The selector is in position «R», the engine is running at idle speed.
All electrical consumers and the air conditioner must be turned off.
Examination
Attach the oil tank of the ATF VAG 1924 system to the car.
Connect VAS 5051 and switch up display «Feature/Component Selection».
Then choose «Drive unit (Rem. - gr. 01; 10-26; 28-39)».
Then «Automatic transmission 09D».
Click «Functions».
Click «ATF level check».
Start the engine.
Press the brake pedal.
Turn on the selector for 2 speeds in each position. Then switch the selector to position «R».
Raise the vehicle.
Place a tray under the gearbox.
Testing at 35°C
Remove the screw plug to check the ATF level in the oil pan (pic. 3.1).
The ATF level is too low if only a small amount of ATF flows out after the plug is loosened.
If after about 30 seconds ATF no longer drains, add ATF.
Top up with ATF using the ATF filler VAG 1924 until oil flows out of the check hole.
Let the ATF drain until it just drips.
Install the ATF oil level plug with a new oil seal and tighten to 70 Nm. This completes the ATF level check.
The ATF level is too high if ATF flows out after the screw plug is loosened.
Let the ATF drain until it just drips.
Install the ATF oil level plug with a new oil seal and tighten to 70 Nm. This completes the ATF level check.
Turn off the engine.
The ATF level is normal if a low flow of ATF flows out after unscrewing the screw plug, then only drops flow down when the temperature of the ATF rises.
Install the ATF oil level plug with a new oil seal and tighten to 70 Nm. This completes the ATF level check.
Transmission
If the gearbox cover has been loosened or oil has been drained from the gearbox, do not start the engine or tow the vehicle.
Thoroughly clean the joints and their adjacent surfaces, then unscrew these connections.
When installing the gearbox, make sure that the centering sleeves fit correctly between the engine and gearbox.
Place the removed parts on a clean surface and cover to protect them from contamination. To do this, use film and paper. Do not use rags that leave fibers.
If repair is not carried out immediately, carefully cover or cover the parts.
Install only clean parts. Remove spare parts from the packaging only immediately before installation.
It is forbidden to start the engine and tow the vehicle if the oil pan is removed from the gearbox or there is no ATF oil in the crankcase.
With the gearbox removed, secure the torque converter to prevent it from falling.
Before installing the gearbox, check the mounting dimension of the torque converter.
After installation, check the ATF oil level.
Gaskets, O-rings
Always replace O-rings, O-rings and seals.
After removing the seals, check the bearing surfaces of the crankcases/shafts for damage and burrs and repair if necessary.
Before installing the lip seal, lubricate the outer perimeter and sealing lip with a thin layer of ATF oil, depending on the installation location (pic. 3.2).
Use only ATF in the ATF circuit. Other lubricants will cause damage to the gearbox's hydraulic control system.
Install O-rings with open side to oil.
After installation, check the ATF oil level.
Oil
CAUTION: Be careful when handling oil. Do not add oil additives. Do not mix different types of oils. Drained oil must not be reused. Oil can be found commercially. In addition, you can find the part number in the spare parts catalog.
Bolts and nuts
Unscrew / tighten the bolts or nuts securing the covers and crankcases should be «criss-cross».
Tightening torques are for unlubricated bolts/screws and nuts.
Clean the threads of bolts previously lubricated with thread varnish with a wire brush. Then install the bolts using AMV 185 101 A1 thread varnish.
All threaded holes into which self-locking bolts/screws are screwed must be cleaned with a tap to remove any remaining thread varnish. Otherwise, during the next dismantling, their threads may be torn off.
Always replace self-locking bolts and nuts.
Gearbox marking
The 09D Allrad automatic transmission is fitted to the Touareg.
The gearbox codes are located on the rating plate on the bottom left side of the gearbox (pic. 3.3).
The letter designations of the gearbox are also present on the nameplates with the vehicle data.
