The following conditions lead to the termination of the parking process using the AMS:
- APP is turned off with the parking assistant button in the gaps -E581-Ignition is turned off
- Parking speed too high (up to 7 km/h)
- Driver intervention in the steering during parking
- Switching off reverse gear
- Exceeding the limit of time spent in a stationary state (about 30 s)
- ESP turns off or ESP intervention occurs
- ASR intervention
- Presence of a trailer
- Front parking aid activated (PAP (PDC))
- Sensors detect a condition that prevents a reliable determination of the position of the vehicle
- System error
WARNING: Responsibility for parking lies with the driver. The parking aid cannot be a substitute for driver attention. The sensors have dead zones where people and objects cannot be detected. Pay special attention to children and pets as the sensors may not always recognize them.
The APP system consists of...
- Clearance parking aid control unit -J791-
- Clearance parking assistant button -E581-
- Parking aid button -E266-
- Front left sender for automatic transmission, left side of vehicle -G568-
- Front left sender -G255- Front left center sender -G254-
- Front right center sender -G253-Front right sender -G252-
- Front right sender for automatic transmission, right side of vehicle -G569-
- Front parking aid warning buzzer -H22-
Fault recognition and error indication
The AMS system is equipped with a self-diagnostic system that facilitates troubleshooting. For troubleshooting, use the tester -VAS 5051 A- in the "Guided Fault Finding". To check the entire AMS system, perform diagnostics of the actuating elements.
Gap parking assistant
- 1 - Front left sender for automatic transmission, left side of vehicle -G568-, in front bumper trim. In case of repair, replace sensor and sensor holder
- 2 - Front left sensor -G255-, in front bumper trim, in case of repair, replace sensor and sensor holder
- 3 - Front left center sender -G254-, in radiator grille, if repaired, replace sender and sender holder
- 4 - Front right center sender -G253-, in radiator grille
- 5 - Front right sensor -G252-, in front bumper trim, if repaired, replace sensor and sensor holder
- 6 - Front right sensor for AMS, right side of vehicle -G569-, in front bumper trim, in case of repair, replace sensor and sensor holder
- 7 - Warning buzzer for front parking aid -H22-, in the footwell on the driver's side above the dash panel relay box on the left
- 8 - Front parking aid button -E266-, in the center console compartment in front of the gear lever
- 9 - Clearance parking aid button -E581-, in the center console compartment in front of the gear lever
- 10 - Clearance parking aid control unit -J791-, in the footwell on the driver's side above the dash panel relay box on the left, tightening torque of the mounting bolt: 5 Nm
Clearance parking aid control unit -J791-
The clearance parking aid control unit -J791- is located behind the stowage compartment in the footwell on the driver's side, above the relay box. On vehicles with PPA or APP, the rear parking aid control unit also controls the functions of the rear parking aid.
Removing and installing clearance parking aid control unit -J791-
Switch off the ignition and all electrical consumers, remove the ignition key. Remove trim in driver's footwell. Press latches -arrows- apart and remove parking aid control unit -J791- with wires connected, from holder.
Unlock and disconnect the three connectors -arrows- and remove the parking aid control unit -J791- -1- from the vehicle.
Installation is carried out in the reverse order.
Front Parking Aid Sensors or Clearance Parking Aid Sensors
The front parking aid sensors and the parking aid gap sensors are installed in the front bumper trim. The two gap assist sensors are located at the edges of the front bumper trim and are used in the parking process together with the parking assist sensors to measure the distance.
Instructions: When installing a new front bumper cover or a new radiator grille, the sensor holders must be glued into the bumper cover or radiator grille following the specified process steps.
Removal and installation of front parking aid sensors or parking aid sensors in gaps
The following 6 sensors are located in the front bumper cover.
- Front left sender for automatic transmission, left side of vehicle -G568-
- Front left sender -G255-
- Front left center sender -G254-
- Front right center sender -G253-
- Front right sender -G252-
- Front right sender for automatic transmission, right side of vehicle -G569-
Note: The removal and installation of the front parking aid sensors and the parking aid sensors in the gaps is carried out in the same way, so the following description is only for one sensor.
Switch off the ignition and all electrical consumers, remove the ignition key.
Caution: Be sure to follow the procedure for removing the sensors. 0 otherwise the sensor may be damaged. When excessive force is applied to the sensor, microcracks can occur, which lead to its failure. First remove the sensor from the holder and then disconnect the sensor connector.
Remove the front bumper cover. Press catches -arrows- on sensor holder -1- outward and pull sensor -2- with wires connected back out of holder.
Instructions: When removing the sensor, make sure that the decoupling ring (black silicone ring) remained on the sensor head, not in the holder and was not lost. Stretching of the disconnect ring must be absolutely avoided.
Unlock and unplug connector -2- and remove sensor -1-.
Installation in reverse order.
Caution: An incorrect or damaged decoupling ring may cause malfunctions. Stretching of the release ring must be absolutely avoided. Replace damaged break rings and make sure the correct break ring is installed. Since the sensors for the front parking aid and the sensors for the parking aid in the gaps have different head lengths, the disconnect rings are also installed with different heights.
Check if the correct decoupling ring is installed on the sensor head.
Clearance parking assistant button -E581-
The gap assist button is located in the center console compartment in front of the gear lever. It has a parking aid indicator lamp -K241- and is not dismantled further. The removal and installation of the parking aid button in the gaps -E581- is carried out in the same way as the other buttons in the center console compartment.
Front parking aid warning buzzer -H22-
The front parking aid warning buzzer -H22- is located on the left under the instrument cluster, above the relay box. Switch off the ignition and all electrical consumers, remove the ignition key. Remove instrument cluster. Pull out pins on both rivets -arrows- and remove front parking aid warning buzzer -H22- -1-, taking into account the length of the connected wires.
Unlock and disconnect connector -arrow- and remove front parking aid warning buzzer -H22- -1- from vehicle.
Installation is carried out in the reverse order.
Rear parking aid warning buzzer -H15- (vehicles with AMS)
On vehicles with PPA or AMS, the parking aid functions are controlled by the clearance parking aid control unit -J791-. For this reason, adapting the rear parking aid warning buzzer (ZPA) -H15- on vehicles with PPA or AMS is carried out via the parking aid control unit in the gaps -J791-.
