The ignition coil is checked for winding resistance, for short circuits between the windings and insulation breakdown to ground. A breakdown of insulation to ground is detected by burnout or melting of the ignition coil plastic shell. Measure the ignition coil winding resistance with an ohmmeter.
Check the ignition coil in the following order.
2.0 liter engine:
- turn off the ignition and disconnect the high voltage wire from the high voltage transformer;
Fig. 215. Terminals "1", "4" and "15" on the high voltage transformer, for checking the resistance of the primary and secondary windings of the ignition coil on a 2.0-liter engine
- connect an ohmmeter between terminals "1" (plus) and "15" (minus) (Fig. 215) and measure the resistance of the primary winding, which should be 0.5-1.2 Ohm;
- connect an ohmmeter between terminals "15" and "4" (central cable) and measure the resistance of the secondary winding, which should be 3-4 kOhm;
- if the resistance does not correspond to the specified values, then a new high voltage transformer should be installed.
VR6 Engine
It is recommended to check the ignition coils of the VR6 engine at a service station.
