Checking the tightness of connections (VW Golf 4)

The presence of puddles on the garage floor or engine, or obvious moisture under the hood or under the car, suggests a leak that needs to be found and repaired immediately. Sometimes it can be difficult to locate the leak, especially if the engine bay is very dirty. An oil or fluid leak can also be blown backwards by air flow under the car, giving a false impression of where the leak is.

Oil pan



Engine oil may leak from the drain plug.

Oil from the filter



Oil may leak through the base of the oil filter.

Gearbox oil



Oil may leak past the seal on the inner ends of the drive shafts.



Antifreeze



Antifreeze leaks often leave a clear residue.

Brake fluid



Leaks in the wheels can only be from brake fluid.

Power Steering Fluid



Power steering fluid may leak from the pipe connections on the steering shelf.
