- gray color, then this indicates normal operation of the spark plugs and normal composition of the mixture;
- black, then this indicates an enriched mixture;
- light gray, then this indicates a lean mixture;
- oily, then this indicates a failure of the spark plug or poor sealing of the piston rings (check the compression).
Spark plugs can be cleaned with a brass brush or sandblasted.
The spark plug interelectrode distance depends on the engine type.
A sign that the wear limit of platinum spark plugs has been reached is when the central electrode is no longer visible in the insulating base. In this case, the spark plugs must be replaced.
General information about the candles used is given in Table 8.
Note: The new extended-life spark plugs can only be installed on vehicles with the TSZ-H ignition system if the ignition coil has been upgraded. The ignition coil design is marked with a specific sticker colour, see table. If in doubt, consult a service station.
