Starting in August 1979, a gravity valve was installed in the car. It is located near the filler pipe. This valve shuts off the fuel line when the machine is tilted.
This prevents diesel fuel from escaping through the ventilation system when the tank is filled to the brim and the vehicle is parked in an inclined position. The gravity valve works in the same way if the machine "Volkswagen" after the accident lies on the roof, upside down. If fuel is difficult to fill, or the fuel dispenser turns off when priming, the gravity valve should be checked.
Remove the cover over the right rear wheel.
Check whether the gravity valve is installed vertically.
If not, install vertically.
If there are irregularities despite the correct positioning, disconnect the hose clamps: remove the ventilation pipes from the valve.
Remove the valve from its holder.
Attach the auxiliary hoses at the top and bottom valve connections.
Place the lower hose in a container filled with water.
Now you hold the valve vertically and blow through the top hose, this is easy to do, air bubbles should appear in the container.
Then tilt the valve 45 degrees and blow through it again.
Now this can be done, but already with strong resistance, and air bubbles will not appear in the container.
When replacing the gravity valve, pay attention to its correct position.
