The rear wiper on the Golf model is powered by a relay. On models produced before July 1977, the rear wiper operates continuously once switched on. On models produced after August 1977, the wiper only makes a few strokes when the switch is pressed. With the help of a new relay (mounted on models "Golf II" after January 1985) the rear window wiper can be switched on in interval mode. The interval mode is switched off by pressing the switch again.
Terminal 53 supplies current to the windshield wiper motor; terminal 53a is used for reverse. When the switch is pressed accordingly, the rear pump of the washing device starts to function, but water appears at the jet with a delay.
