Torque converter seal (VW Golf 1)

If oil is leaking through the torque converter seal, the seal must be replaced. To do this, remove the transmission from the engine.

Remove the torque converter from the housing without tilting it. Press the oil seal as shown in Figure K:13. Make sure the oil seal seat is clean and lubricate the surface of the seat and the new oil seal with clean ATF oil for automatic transmission (you can't use regular motor oil).



Press the new seal into the socket until it stops (drawing K:14). Be careful as the seal is made of very soft material and is easily damaged.
