Removal
Removing the oil pump is possible without removing the engine.
Drain the oil from the engine.
Remove the muffler cover.
Support the engine with a mobile garage jack with a wide wooden shim.
Unscrew the engine beam.
Remove the V-belt.
Remove the belt pulley. Unscrew the 4 nuts on the pump cover.
Remove the pump cover with gasket and pull out the gears.
Using light blows from a rubber hammer, knock out the oil pump housing, or pull it out using a special puller (VAG No. VW 201).
Examination
Before installation, check the wear of the oil pump housing and gear bearing areas. Worn surfaces in the housing lead to a decrease in oil pressure.
Check the reliability of the fastening of the short gear shaft inserted into the housing and, if necessary, replace the housing.
Check the axial clearance of the oil pump. To do this, place a measuring ruler on the oil pump body and measure the clearance with a feeler gauge. The clearance can be a maximum of 0.1 mm.
Check the pump cover for signs of wear; if the cover is worn, subject it to end grinding or replace it.
Check the integrity and cleanliness of the mating surface with the oil pump on the engine crankcase.
Installation
Insert the oil pump housing with a new sealing ring and put on the gears.
Turn the crankshaft two revolutions so that the camshaft turns one revolution and turns the pump gears. This centers the gears in the pump.
Install the cover with a new gasket, insert the sealing nuts and tighten with a tightening torque of 25 Nm, without changing the position of the pump body. The sealing ring on the nuts faces inward.
Install the belt pulley.
Install the V-belt.
Screw on the engine beam.
Install the muffler cover.
Fill the engine with oil.
