Replacing the PTO/Rear Propeller Shaft Flange Seal (Transfer Case Installed) (VW Touareg 1)

Removal



Remove the rear propeller shaft.

Unscrew the PTO shaft flange nuts (fig. 3.121).

Unscrew the PTO shaft flange nuts (fig. 3.121).


A - Hexagon bolt M 10x30 with nuts.

Remove the PTO shaft flange.

Remove the sealing ring using the VW 771 universal tool and the VW 771/37 puller (fig. 3.111).

Clean the nut threads.

Installation



Fill the space between the working and dust lips of the seal halfway with plastic grease G 052 128 A1.

Press the new sealing ring in until it stops, without distorting it (fig. 3.112).

Install the power take-off shaft flange.

Soak a new O-ring in transmission oil and install.

On figure 3.119 shows an O-ring seal on the PTO/Front Propeller Shaft flange.

Lubricate the threads of the new nuts with Loctite 648 locking varnish.

Tighten the new PTO shaft flange nuts to the specified tightening torque (fig. 3.121).

Fasten the nuts to the designated places (for example, with a mandrel) (fig. 3.120).

Install the rear propeller shaft.

Check the transmission fluid level in the transfer case.

Tightening torque: PTO shaft flange nuts to PTO shaft 130 Nm.
