1. Disconnect the fuel injection line (arrow) and plug it with a cloth (figure 2.89).

2. Connect the VAG 1318 pressure gauge with the VAG 1318/18 adapter (figure 2.90).

3. Open the pressure gauge shut-off valve. The lever should be set in the direction of flow. Start the engine and let it idle.
4. Measure the fuel pressure. The set value is approximately 3.4 bar.
5. Disconnect the vacuum line from the fuel pressure regulator on the intake manifold (arrow) (figure 2.91). The fuel pressure should increase to 4.0 bar.

6. If the fuel pressure has risen above 4.0 bar, check the connection between the filter in the intake manifold and replace the connection if necessary.
7. Turn off the ignition.
8. Check the holding pressure and the absence of leaks by observing the decrease in pressure on the pressure gauge. After 10 minutes the pressure should be at least 2.4 bar.

9. If the holding pressure is below 2.4 bar, start the engine and let it idle.
10 When the pump builds up pressure again, turn off the ignition after reaching the required pressure. The shut-off valve of the pressure gauge must be closed for some time (the lever is installed perpendicular to the fuel flow).
11. Observe the fuel pressure drop again.
12. If the pressure does not drop, replace the fuel pressure regulator.
13. If the pressure drops again, check the pressure gauge for leaks, the fuel line connections, the O-rings on the intake manifold and injectors.
14. If no leaks are found, replace the fuel delivery line.
