1. Remove the wheel.

2. Loosen the mounting screw and remove the brake drum. If it is tightly seated, screw three M10x40 screws into the specially cut holes in the drum to remove it. If the drum is sticking to the brake linings, loosen the adjuster by inserting a screwdriver through the hole in the back plate. If necessary, please contact Chapter 9.

3. Remove the four nuts that secure the bearing retainer and pull the axle shaft out of the axle housing. Be prepared for some oil to spill.

4. If you intend to replace the bearing, use a sharp cold chisel to cut a groove in the bearing retaining ring. This will expand the ring considerably, making it easier to remove. Remove the roller cover and O-ring.

5. If you do not have a press, you can make an auxiliary tool similar to the one shown in Figure 8.8 and attach it to the bearing holder. When screws are subsequently screwed into it, they will create enough pressure to remove the bearing together with the holder.

6. Remove the outer bearing race from the axle shaft using a suitable puller.

7. Install the outer race of the new bearing into the axle shaft housing using a piece of tubing placed on its outer rim.

8. The inner race of the new bearing and its retaining ring should be inserted simultaneously, but they should be heated as follows:
  • Inner bearing race - up to 100°C.
  • Mounting ring - from 250°C to 280°C - until cherry or purple in color.

9. Before installing the components on the axle shaft, install the new oil seal on the bearing retainer, installing it at the same time as the roller race and the new O-ring.

10. Place the heated parts together and press them together.

11. Apply grease to the bearing rollers, then insert the axle shaft into the housing. Hold the axle shaft horizontally and rotate it slightly in both directions until you feel the inner end of the axle shaft align with the splines of the differential gear.

12. Insert the axle completely into place. Install and tighten the bearing retainer nuts to the required torque.

13. Install the brake drum and wheel.

14. If you loosened the brake drum adjuster, re-adjust the brakes as described in Chapter 9.

15. Check the oil level in the rear axle and top up if necessary.
