General description — models with a 2.4 l engine (VW Lt 28)

1. The 2.4-liter 6-cylinder engine was first installed on the models in question at the beginning of 1983, replacing the 2-liter 4-cylinder engines that are no longer installed on VW LT models.

2. The 2.4L engine is a 6-cylinder, in-line, 4-stroke, water-cooled engine and is longitudinally mounted on the vehicle.

3. The overhead camshaft is driven by a toothed belt from a sprocket on the crankshaft. The same belt drives the water pump of the cooling system. The camshaft rotates in 4 bearings directly embedded in the cylinder head.

4. The valve mechanism has a traditional design, but the valve clearances are adjusted using special adjusting washers of varying thickness installed in the tappets.

5. The pistons have a conventional design and are equipped with two compression rings and one oil scraper ring. The piston is attached to the connecting rod by a piston pin, which is secured by retaining rings. The lower heads of the connecting rods rotate in connecting rod bearings with white metal liners.

6. The crankshaft rotates in 7 main bearings. The axial movement of the crankshaft is controlled by thrust washers, which are located on both sides of main bearing No. 4. At the end of the crankshaft on the flywheel side there is a needle roller bearing.

7. The flywheel is attached to the crankshaft with bolts.

8. The oil pump is gear-type and has a direct drive from the crankshaft.

9. The mechanical distributor is located at the rear of the cylinder head and is driven by the camshaft.
