Carburetor adjustment (VW Beetle)

All variants of the Kafer car considered in this manual are equipped with the same type of carburetor, in which, depending on the engine power, the diffuser diameter and set of jets vary.

Each carburetor was tested at the factory before installation and adjusted for a specific brand of gasoline. This setting cannot be changed independently. Excessive fuel consumption and reduced engine power almost always have other causes, the main ones being the driving style and traffic conditions. Usually, careful adjustment of the idle speed will suffice. Their correct adjustment is more important than is commonly thought, since it affects the increase in engine responsiveness even to reach medium revs.

Engine operation after turning off the ignition and stopping during sudden braking is most often a consequence of an over-enriched combustible mixture at idle; exhaust detonation in a moving vehicle, on the other hand, indicates a lean mixture. A loss of throttle response when pressing the accelerator pedal is often explained by either too little or too much fuel being supplied by the accelerator pump.
