Half shaft elements: 1 - axle shaft; 2 - protective cover of the hinge; 3 - hinge; 4 - protective cap; 5 - retaining ring
Attention! Since 1981, solid axle shafts have been used in cars, on the disc springs of which there is an internal ring gear. These springs cannot be used on other axle shafts. The disc spring must be installed on each half shaft twice (between hinge and shaft). Solid axle shafts are recognized by 5 circular grooves.
Removing
Defective hinge protectors must be replaced immediately, otherwise the bearings may be damaged. Hinges are replaced as a set.
Raise the rear of the vehicle and place it on stands.
Loosen the hexagon socket screws on both hinges, remove the axle shaft.
Attention! Do not allow dirt to get on the hinges!
Remove the retaining ring using special pliers.
Bend the protective cap away from the hinge using a punch.
Press out the hinge with a press, remove the protective cap.
Installation
Attention! Place 45 g of M0S2 based paste on each side of the clean hinge. When replacing the protective cover of the hinge, lubricate the latter.
Before installation, check the protective cover of the hinge for scratches and worn places, replace if necessary.
Pull the cover over the hinge, press the hinge onto the axle shaft. At the same time, install the circlip into the groove. If necessary, press it in with special pliers.
Install the protective cap on the hinge and clamp it at the back with a band clamp.
Fit axle shafts, place washers under hexagon socket bolts and tighten to 45 Nm (4.5 kgcm).
