Main clutch faults (VW Golf 4)

The clutch pedal is easy to press or sinks

• Low fluid level in the clutch hydraulic system
• Damage to the release bearing or clutch release fork
• The diaphragm spring of the clutch pressure plate is damaged

Incomplete clutch disengagement (clutch leads)

• Too high fluid level in the hydraulic clutch system
• The driven clutch disc is seized on the splines of the primary shaft
• Warping of the clutch disc
• The pressure plate assembly is incorrectly assembled
• The clutch release mechanism is worn out or incorrectly assembled

Incomplete clutch engagement (the clutch is slipping)

• Clutch disc lining wear below acceptable limit
• Clutch disc linings contaminated with oil or lubricant
• The pressure plate is faulty or the diaphragm spring is weak

Jerks when engaging the clutch

• Clutch disc lining wear below acceptable limit
• Clutch disc linings contaminated with oil or lubricant
• The pressure plate or diaphragm spring is deformed
• The gearbox to engine mounts are loose
• The clutch disc hub or gearbox input shaft splines are worn out

Noise when pressing or releasing the clutch pedal

• The release bearing is worn out
• Clutch pedal bushings are worn out or lack lubrication.
• The pressure plate assembly is faulty
• Damage to the diaphragm spring of the pressure plate
• Damage to damping springs in the clutch disc
