The gearbox can be of the 4- or 5-speed type, depending on the model, with the exception of the LT 40/45 versions, which are equipped with only a 5-speed type.
Forward gears are fully synchronized and speed selection is accomplished via a floor-mounted shift lever.
The clutch housing can be separated from the gearbox housing.
Since August 1973, all models have been equipped with a five-speed clutch and gearbox housing design, regardless of the number of speeds provided.
At regular intervals as specified in the Service Schedule, remove the plug from the side of the transmission and check the oil level. If the oil level is at the bottom of the hole, then there is no need to add more oil. If the level is low, top it up to the required level using the appropriate type of oil.
Although the transmission is filled for life, it is recommended that the oil be changed at the intervals specified in the Service Schedule in order to slow down the normal breakdown of the additives in the oil and to prevent the accumulation of metal particles that are formed as a result of friction and tooth contact and will contaminate the oil despite the integral magnet. Bolt-type plugs are used on both the oil level check hole and the oil drain hole. Always drain the oil from the gearbox while it is hot, and remove all sediment from the plug before installing it.
