Removal and installation the rear cylinder block cover (VW Caddy 3)

A special design feature of the rear cylinder block cover is the presence of a toothed ring gear of the engine speed sensor (crankshaft position), which comes with the rear crankshaft oil seal as one piece. Moreover, when installing the cover in place, the toothed ring is placed on the crankshaft. After the cover is centered relative to the crankshaft, the ring gear rotates freely in the cover. The gap between the ring gear and the sensor is ensured by the design of the cover and its correct installation.

Procedure for performing work

1. Remove the flywheel and/or driven disk.

2. Set the engine to TDC of cylinder No. 1.

3. Remove the oil pan.

4. Remove the engine speed sensor (G28) (arrow).

5. Unscrew the screws securing the rear cover of the cylinder block.

Caution! The sealing flange and ring gear are removable (from the crankshaft) using three M6x35 mm screws.

6. Screw three M6x35 mm screws into the threaded holes of the flange (arrows).



7. Alternately tightening the screws (maximum 1/2 turn (180°) each) into the sealing flange, remove the rear crankshaft cover together with the engine speed sensor (G28) from the crankshaft.
