Engine lift (VW Golf 1)

Various lifting devices such as a crane, winch or pulley block can be used to lift the engine (figure 29 and 30). In any case, the permissible load of the lifting device must correspond to the weight of the engine. The winch or block and tackle can be secured to the ceiling beam of the garage, with additional supports placed under the beam on both sides of the car. If there is no suitable beam, the block and tackle or hoist can be secured to a portable portal (figure 29).

If the engine has lifting eyes, attach the engine to the lifting device using hooks. If there are no eyes, tie slings around the engine, making sure that the slings grab parts of the engine that can withstand the load (for example, support brackets or projections of the cylinder block casting). If you use slings (ropes) made of natural fibre, make sure that they are not contaminated with oil - this greatly reduces the strength of the rope.

It is recommended to have an assistant present when lifting the engine for safety reasons. An assistant is also needed to roll the vehicle to the side once the engine is lifted out of the engine bay.
