Replacing the hub journal (VW Golf 1)

The rear hub journal must be replaced if the bearing seating surfaces or threads are damaged, or if it is bent due to a strong impact.

Replacement

1. Remove the hub with the brake drum or disc as described previously.

2. Disconnect the handbrake cable from the brake shoe lever and brake shield.

3. Remove the four bolts securing the brake shield and hub journal to the rear axle, separate the brake shield and journal from the axle, then remove the journal from the brake shield (figure H:9). There is no need to disconnect the brake line, but be careful not to damage it.



4. The journal is installed in the reverse order. Check the cleanliness of the mating surfaces of the hub journal and the axle flange. Tighten the mounting bolts with a torque of 6.0 kg·m.

5. Assemble the hub onto the journal as described earlier.
