Golf, Jetta, Scirocco models have a semi-independent rear suspension with a rear axle consisting of two longitudinal tubular arms connected to each other by a transverse torsion beam. The beam has a T-shaped welded profile and consists of two elastic steel strips. Welded connections between beam and arms are reinforced with additional corner plates.
On performance models with injection engines 1.6 and 1.8 liters, a rear anti-roll bar is installed.
Telescopic MacPherson struts are installed on the rear suspension, which are a telescopic shock absorber equipped with a spring. The lower mounts of the struts have rubber bushings and are bolted to the trailing arms of the rear axle. The upper mounts of the struts are connected to the body through rubber bushings using nuts with washers. Wheel bearings - tapered, roller, adjustable. The rear axle is mounted on rubber hinges (silent blocks), which absorb the impact of the wheels on the unevenness of the road.
When purchasing spare parts (shock absorbers, springs, etc.) you need to know exactly the model and identification number (VIN) car.
Tool and equipment
In addition to the tools listed in chapter "Basic rules for work", to perform work on the rear suspension, spring compressors are required - to remove the suspension springs from the telescopic struts.
