Optimal driving characteristics and minimal tire wear can only be achieved if the wheels are installed perfectly. If tire wear is abnormal and there is insufficient stability on the road - poor stability when driving straight, as well as poor control on turns, you should contact a workshop for optical measurement of the car.

Where such a measurement is not possible, only the camber and toe-in of the front wheels are checked.

It is hardly possible to do more than check the front wheel alignment outside a workshop. Therefore, I limit myself to describing only these measurements.

Adjustment

It is advisable to measure the car with an optical device to determine the position of the car's wheels. If there is no such device, then the wheel camber can be checked with a VW 3021 angle meter, and the wheel alignment - with a mechanical template. The following conditions must be met for any measurement:
  • prescribed tire pressure.
  • absolutely flat horizontal surface.
  • the car must have an empty weight (with a spare tire and, if possible, a full fuel tank).
  • properly adjusted steering.
  • absence of unacceptable play in the steering rods and wheel suspension.
  • correctly installed springs.
