Since July 1978, the installation of Perkins engines ceased and the Volkswagen SR engine began to be installed, while the drive system components remained unchanged. The Volkswagen SR engine features pre-chamber injection, a compression ratio of 23, and an engine displacement of 2,383 cm². It achieves a power output of 55 kW (75 hp according to DIN) at 4500 rpm. The engine has no cylinder liners, the crankshaft, at the front end of which the oil pump is installed, is supported by 7 bearings.

The cylinder head is made of light alloy, and the camshaft, supported by four bearings machined directly into the head, is driven by a toothed belt. A gear is mounted at the rear end of the camshaft, which, via a toothed belt of the same type, drives the fuel pump. The vacuum pump (depressor) and generator are driven by a V-belt. The pump is driven by the camshaft via a toothed belt.

In December 1982, the Volkswagen SR engine was modified: its inclination in the car was changed from 5.5° to 27.5°, which allowed the cylinder head cover to be reduced by approximately 150 mm. The DW engine is equipped with a variable-capacity oil pan. The oil supply and cooling system wire hoses have also been modified. A direct drive of the vacuum pump from the camshaft was used, and the fuel pump is equipped with a variable injection start in the cold start device. The air filter is located under the driver's seat.

Since the beginning of 1983, the diesel engine installed in LT models could be supplied with a turbocharger. Sold under the name DV, this motor has a power of 75 kW (102 hp according to DIN) at 4300 rpm, i.e. 36% more than the DW engine.

The following changes were required: new head packing, oil jet for cooling the piston crown, oil radiator, modified cooling system wire hoses, new fuel pump with charging pressure regulator. All car models have the same drive system components.

Since August 1989, these engines have been included in the ECE noise regulations. The engine specifications have not undergone any significant changes compared to the DV and DW engines. Their designations have been changed to DV 1G and DW 1S. Compared to previous weeks, the engine power has changed to 68 kW (92 hp DIN) at 3500 rpm and 51 kW (69 hp DIN) at 3400 rpm. Changes to the engine design: new fuel pump, tappets with hydraulic clearance (play) release, shorter valves, different camshaft. The drive system has not changed, but the installation of a 4-speed gearbox has been discontinued.
