Replacing the air filter (VW Beetle)

Depending on the vehicle variant, the engine may be equipped with either a dry or an inertial-oil air filter.

Dry air filter

Removal

Disconnect the gray vacuum hose and the heated air duct from the filter.



Unscrew the bolt and remove it. Remove the air filter.

Using a screwdriver, remove the clamps from the air filter, remove the filter cover, and remove the paper filter element. Wipe the filter.

The paper filter element should be replaced every 30,000 km.

Installation

Insert the paper filter element. Install the filter cover and secure with clamps.

Install the filter in place, screw the screws into the bracket, tighten (not too tight) filter mounting bolt.

Connect the vacuum hose and the hot air hose.

Inertial-oil air filter

Removal

Disconnect the heated air duct from the air filter. Loosen the filter mounting bolt.

Remove the air filter.

Caution! Keep the filter upright to avoid oil spills.

Release the clamp on the air filter and remove the filter cover.

Caution! Oil will leak out. The oil in the filter must be changed every 30,000 km.

Rinse the bottom of the filter with gasoline. Fill oil up to the mark.

Caution! Do not add too much oil.

Installation

Install the filter cover and secure it with clamps.

Install the filter in place; its nozzle should be located on the right.

Tighten the filter mounting bolt (not too tight, otherwise it will pinch the air valve).

Connect the heated air duct to the filter.
