Replacing shock absorbers (VW Beetle)

Removal

Raise the car and place it on supports, remove the wheel.

Loosen the shock absorber mounting nut on the lower control arm.



To avoid damaging the shock absorber, compress the upper control arm using a suitable tool. You can also place a jack under the lower support arm and slightly lift the arm.

Unscrew the upper shock absorber mounting nut and remove the shock absorber.



To release the nut, pull the buffer off and hold it with coolant pump pliers (if necessary).



If the nut does not unscrew, tighten the buffer and unscrew the shock absorber piston rod as shown in the figure.





Replace the worn buffer. To do this, unscrew the rod as shown in the figure.

Installation

Before installation, check the shock absorber (see section "Removal, installation and inspection of shock absorbers and coil springs").

Install the shock absorber and slide it from below onto the rod. Place the spacer washer. Tighten the nut.

Caution! When replacing the shock absorber, install a new rubber cushion with the edge facing up.

Install the upper rubber cushion with the side from below, install the cushion plate and tighten the shock absorber mounting nut to a torque of 20 Nm (2.0 kgfm).

Remove the spring compressor or jack, install the wheel, lower the vehicle and tighten the wheel bolts to 130 N⋅m (13.0 kg⋅cm).
