1234567

The chassis number is deciphered as follows:
  • 1 - manufacturer code: VWV = Volkswagen;
  • 2 - equipment;

  • 4 - detailed equipment;
  • 5 - year of manufacture: W = 1998, X = 1999, etc;

  • 7 - chassis number.

On 4-cylinder engines, the number is located on the left side of the cylinder block, below the parting line between the block and cylinder head.

On 5- and 6-cylinder engines, the number is located on the right side of the cylinder block under the parting line of the block and the cylinder head. To find the number on 5- and 6-cylinder engines, unscrew the engine trim fastener.

Additionally, the engine number is indicated on a barcode sticker on the timing belt cover.
