Removal and installation camshafts (VW Lt 2d)

Removal



1. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.

2. Remove the cylinder head cover; cylinders.

3. Disconnect the coolant pipes from the thermostat housing.

4. Disconnect the thermostat housing from the upper cover of the distribution mechanism.

5. Remove the top cover of the timing mechanism.

6. Set the crankshaft to 20° after TDC (figure 2.18).

7. Remove the timing chain tensioner.

8. Unscrew the bolts and remove the upper damper bar 1 (figure 2.27).

9. Lock the camshafts using wrench 3437.

10. Disconnect the gears from the camshafts.

11. Remove the camshaft drive chain.

12. Rotate the camshafts using a 3437 wrench until the base circle of the cams is as close as possible to the hydraulic lifters (figure 2.45).

13. Unscrew bolts 1 and remove the camshaft bearing cover 2 (figure 2.46). Remove the intake 3 and exhaust 4 camshafts from the cylinder head.

Installation



14. Lubricate the working surfaces of the camshafts with oil.

15. Note the camshaft marks on the second bearing (arrow) (figure 2.47).

  • Intake camshaft: 16.
  • Exhaust camshaft: 17.

16. Install the camshafts in the bearing locations so that the main circle of the cams is adjacent to the hydraulic compensators.

17. Ensure that the camshaft bearing caps are installed correctly (figure 2.48).

18. Install the 2 camshaft bearing caps on the inlet 3 and outlet 4 camshafts and tighten the flange bolts 1 to 20 Nm (figure 2.46).

19. Rotate the camshafts using the 3437 wrench so that the camshaft locking pins 3436 can be inserted (figure 2.19).

20. Install the camshaft drive chain onto the gears and install the camshaft gears.

21. Remove camshaft locking pins 3436.

22. Tighten the camshaft gears in two stages: stage I - 20 Nm; stage II - 1/4 turn (90°).

23. Install the upper damper bar 1 (figure 2.27). Tightening torque: 10 Nm.

24. Install the timing chain tensioner.

25. Check the valve timing.

26. Install the cylinder head cover.

27. Further installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal.
