Lapping valve seats (VW Lt 2d)

Valve seats can be lapped to achieve a flawless working surface. Before lapping, it is necessary to calculate the maximum permissible lapping value. If this dimension is exceeded, normal hydraulic valve clearance adjustment cannot be ensured and the cylinder head must be replaced.

Calculation of the maximum permissible grinding value



1. Insert the valve and press it firmly against the valve seat.

2. Measure the distance "a" between the end of the valve stem and the top edge of the cylinder head (figure 2.50).

3. The maximum allowable lapping value is calculated based on the measured distance and the minimum size. Minimum dimensions:
  • inlet valve - 34.7 mm;
  • exhaust valve - 33.3 mm.

Measured distance 35.1 mm - Minimum dimension 34.7 mm = Maximum allowable lapping value 0.4 mm.

4. The angles of the inlet valve seat are shown in the figure 2.51a, exhaust valve - in figure 2.51b.
