Power steering gear — removal and installation (VW Lt 28)

66. Jack up the front of the car.

67. Remove the universal joint clamp bolt between the steering gear and the steering column.

68. Disconnect the feed and return hydraulic hoses from the steering gear.

69. Disconnect the steering rod from the steering arm.

70. On LT 28, 31 and 35 models, unscrew the tie bolt, and on LT 40, 45 and 50 models, bend the locking tab and unscrew the nut. Disconnect the steering arm from the steering gear worm.

71. Loosen the bolts securing the steering gear to the chassis element and remove the steering gear.

72. Installation of the steering mechanism is carried out in reverse order.

73. When installing the steering gear, press the steering wheel down to avoid damaging the steering column mount.

74. Before installing the cardan joint between the steering gear and the steering column, set the steering wheel and steering gear strictly to the central position. (The steering gear is in the center position when the steering wheel is turned back approximately 2 turns from each stop).

75. The protrusion on the dust cap must be aligned with the groove on the steering gear box.

76. Upon completion, add hydraulic fluid to the system, bleed it and lower the machine.
