Maintenance work on VW Kafer vehicles is divided into two stages - TO-1 and TO-2.

Maintenance N1 must be carried out every 6 months, but not later than every 5000 km of run (for cars manufactured before August 1981 and from September 1981 - every 7,500 km). In this case, the following work must be performed:
  • engine oil change;
  • cleaning the oil drain cap;
  • checking the brake fluid level in the expansion tank;
  • checking the thickness of the brake friction linings;
  • checking the electrolyte level in the battery, adding distilled water;
  • brake pad adjustment (in cars produced since September 1981.);
  • checking and adjusting the clutch pedal free play (in cars produced since September 1981.);
  • checking and adjusting the valve clearance (in cars produced since September 1981.).

Maintenance N₂ must be carried out every 10,000 km (for cars produced before August 1981.). For vehicles produced since September 1981, TO-2 is carried out every 15,000 km. In this case, the following work must be performed.

Engine and clutch


  • Changing engine oil, cleaning the oil drain cap.
  • Checking and adjusting the ignition distributor.
  • Replacing spark plugs (in cars produced since September 1981.).
  • Replacing the ignition distributor contacts (in cars produced since September 1981.).
  • Adjusting the valve clearance, checking the condition of the cylinder head gasket.
  • Checking the condition and tension of the V-belt.
  • Checking compression in cylinders.
  • Checking the idle speed of a warm engine.
  • Checking the exhaust system.
  • Visual inspection of engine tightness.
  • Check the clutch and, if necessary, adjust the free travel of its pedal.

Gearbox, final drive, steering


  • Check the hinge covers for damage and tight fit.
  • Visual inspection of the gearbox for leaks.
  • Checking the oil level in the steering gear.
  • Checking the oil level in the gearbox and final drive.

Front suspension and steering


  • Checking the play in the tie rod ends and their fastenings, checking the dust caps.
  • Checking the dust caps of the front suspension joints.
  • Checking the steering mechanism for play and damage.
  • Checking wheel alignment.
  • Checking the dust caps of the shock absorber struts and the guide joints.
  • Cleaning the front suspension gutters.

Body


  • Lubrication of door hinges and stops.
  • Lubrication of hood hinges.
  • Checking and, if necessary, repairing the underbody of the car.

Brakes, tires, wheels


  • Checking the pipes, hoses and connections of the brake system for leaks and damage.
  • Checking the free travel of the brake pedal.
  • Checking the free play of the parking brake lever.
  • Checking tires for wear and damage (including spare tire).
  • Tightening the wheel mounting bolts to the specified torque.

Electrical equipment


  • Checking the functionality of all energy consumers.
  • Checking and, if necessary, adjusting the angle of the headlight beam.
  • Checking the operation and position of the windshield washer spray.
  • Checking the battery voltage, level and density of electrolyte in it.

Additionally, every 30,000 km


  • Cleaning the lower part of the inertial-oil air filter, replacing the oil in the filter.
  • Cleaning the paper filter element of the air filter.
  • Front suspension lubrication.
  • Lubrication of door hinges and stops.
  • Changing the ATF oil in an automatic transmission, cleaning the oil pan, oil drain cap, replacing its seal (the work is done in the workshop).

Every two years


  • Replacing brake fluid.
