Different versions of the car are equipped with different steering mechanisms. So, Kafer 1200 is equipped with a roller steering mechanism, and Kafer 1303 - with a rack and pinion steering mechanism.

The peculiarity of the roller steering mechanism is that in a certain area of the steering wheel rotation (in the middle position) the mechanism has no play. When turning the steering wheel sharply while the vehicle is stationary, the play between the steering gear roller and the steering shaft increases. When the vehicle is moving, this increased play disappears due to the large restoring force.

The steering gear housing is filled with 160 cm³ of liquid lubricant or SAE 90 oil for hypoid gears. The oil should reach the bottom edge of the filler hole.
