Checking the valve timing (VW Polo 3)

1. Remove the upper part of the timing belt cover.

2. Remove the cylinder head cover.

3. Align the TDC marks of the piston of cylinder No.1 on the crankshaft:

• A - Engines AEY, ANV, AKW,
• B - Engines AFN, AHU, ALE (fig. 6.3).

4. Lock the camshaft pulley with the locking pin (fig. 6.6).

5. Loosen the camshaft pulley mounting bolt by half a turn.

6. Insert a punch into the hole in the rear timing belt cover and disconnect the camshaft pulley from the hub by lightly tapping the punch with a hammer.

7. Lock the fuel injection pump pulley using locking pin 2064 (Fig. 6.74).



8. Check the alignment of the TDC marks of the piston of cylinder No.1 on the crankshaft. The marks on the flywheel and clutch housing must be aligned.

9. Remove the locking pin.

10. Tighten the camshaft pulley bolt to 45 Nm.

11. Remove the camshaft lock.

12. Install the cylinder head cover and the upper part of the timing belt cover.

13. Perform a dynamic test of the start of fuel injection.
