2. Disconnect the wiring connector from the crankshaft speed sensor.
3. Measure the resistance between contacts 1 and 2 of the connector (Fig. 6.76). Specification value: 1.0-1.5 kOhm.

4. If the specified value is not achieved, replace the sensor.
5. If the specified value is reached:
On vehicles with a 68-pin control unit wiring connector
- Connect the VAG 1598/18 tester to the engine control unit wiring harness (fig. 6.54);
- Check the wire between the tester and the connector for open circuit: contact 1 and socket 33, contact 2 and socket 8, contact 3 and socket 1 (Fig. 6.77). Specified value: 1.5 Ohm;
- Additionally, check the wires for open circuit. Specification resistance: ∞ Ohm.
On vehicles with 80-pin control unit wiring connector
- Connect the VAG 1598/22 tester to the engine control unit wiring harness (fig. 6.56);
- Check the wire between the tester and the connector for open circuit: contact 1 and socket 69, contact 2 and socket 67, contact 3 and socket 71 (Fig. 6.77). Specified value: 1.5 Ohm;
- Additionally, check the wires for open circuit. Specification resistance: ∞ Ohm.

For all cars
6. If no fault is found in the wires, replace the engine control unit.
