Depending on the operating conditions, engine oils are subjected to fairly large variable loads. Therefore, it is very important to accurately determine the effect of operating conditions on lubricants.
In engines running for a long time at high speeds, or at full load, the oil reaches high temperatures.
Under the influence of high temperatures and atmospheric oxygen, the oil begins to oxidize.
Oxidation products thicken oils, especially mineral oils, and can deposit in the form of lacquer coatings on the tops of pistons, in piston ring grooves and on valve stems. This can lead to coking of the valve heads.
