Engine fault diagnostics (VW Transporter T3)

If the engine does not start, a systemic troubleshooting should be performed. There are two possible reasons for preventing the engine from starting: The air-fuel mixture must enter the cylinders and a spark must jump between the spark plug electrodes. Therefore, the first thing to check is whether fuel is being supplied at all. How to do this is described in the sections "Fuel system" and "Fuel injection system".

To determine if there is a spark, remove the spark plugs, insert them into the spark plug tips and hold each one close to ground. Do not hold the tip or spark plug wire with your hands, but only with insulated pliers. Have an assistant turn the engine over with the starter. If there is no spark, locate the fault in accordance with the instructions in the section "Ignition system".
