After removing and installing the steering gear, the hydraulic system must be refilled with fluid and air must be bled from it. Do not refill the hydraulic system with fluid that leaked out when removing the steering gear. Air is bled from the hydraulic steering system automatically after the engine has been running for some time. Observe the following sequence:

Fig. 267. Remove the power steering reservoir cap and check the hydraulic fluid level with a dipstick (the dipstick is located on the cover)

  • the reservoir cap has a dipstick. If the system is cold, the liquid should be within the zone marked "Kalt", if the liquid is at operating temperature, its level should be within the "Warm" zone (Fig. 267);
  • with the engine off, check the hydraulic fluid level;
  • if necessary, top up the hydraulic fluid. When the engine is running, no air bubbles should be visible in the fluid;
  • start the engine and slowly turn the steering wheel first one way and then the other;
  • add hydraulic fluid if necessary.
