The thickness of the friction linings of disc brakes can be checked with the wheel installed using special tool VW 136. If this tool is not available, proceed as follows.
Loosen the wheel nuts, raise the front of the vehicle and place it on stands.
Remove wheel.
Illuminate the brake caliper with a flashlight and estimate the thickness of the friction linings by eye. If it is approximately 2 mm, the wear limit has been reached. For a more accurate check, you need to remove the lining. Note. It is known from practice that wear of 1 mm of the friction lining corresponds to a mileage of approximately 10Q0 km. But this refers to the adverse operating conditions of the brakes, and under normal conditions, the linings last longer. So, with a lining thickness of 5 mm, they will withstand at least another 3000 km of run.
Install the wheel, lower the vehicle and tighten the wheel bolts to 130 Nm (13 kgcm).
