Vehicle maintenance (VW Golf 4)

This chapter is intended to ensure that your vehicle is properly serviced, to help keep your vehicle in good condition and to extend its service life.

If maintenance is not carried out regularly, poor engine performance may result (incomplete power delivery, strange engine behavior, etc.). In this case, you should perform the following steps.

Primary actions:

• clean, inspect and test the battery;
• check all engine related fluids;
• replace spark plugs (gasoline engines);
• check the condition and tension of the auxiliary drive belt;
• check the condition of the air filter and replace if necessary;
• check the condition of all hoses (pipes) and their tightness;
• check the condition of the distributor cap and rotor and high-voltage wires (gasoline engines).

If these steps are not effective, then follow these steps.

Secondary actions:

• check the charging system;
• check the ignition system;
• check the pre-heating system;
• check the fuel system;
• replace the distributor cap and rotor;
• replace high voltage wires.
