To interrogate the fault memory, you need a VAG 1551 fault code reader and a VAG 1551/5 cable.

1. Connect the VAG 1551 (VAG 1552) fault code reader and enter "01" "Engine Electronics." The engine should be idling. If the engine fails to start, engage the starter for 6 seconds. Do not turn off the ignition after this.

2. If the immobilizer warning light (on cars with an immobilizer) started flashing 3 seconds after turning on the ignition, query the fault memory of the immobilizer control unit.

3. If the immobilizer warning light (on cars with an immobilizer) does not flash or there are no faults in the immobilizer control unit fault memory, turn on the starter for 6 seconds.

4. Turn on the fault code reader printer by pressing the PRINT button. The indicator light on the button should light up. The display should show the following information:

  • LT HELP Diagnostics
  • Dial function XX

5. Press "02" to select the "Fault Memory Interrogation" function and confirm by pressing the "Q" button. The display should show the following information:

X faults identified

The display shows the number of faults detected.

6. If there are no faults in the memory, press "→".

7. If there are one or more faults in the memory, they are displayed and printed one by one.

8. After printing the faults, the following information should appear on the display:

  • LT HELP Diagnostics
  • Dial function XX

9. Press "05" to select the "Clear Fault Memory" function and confirm by pressing the "Q" button. The display should show the following information:

  • LT Diagnostics →
  • Clearing the fault memory

10. Click "→".

11. Press "06" to select the "Complete Output" function and confirm by pressing the "Q" button.

12. Perform a test run (engine temperature greater than 80°C) at idle, medium and high loads. At full load, the engine speed should be above 3500 rpm. Then, reread the fault memory.
