Airbags (VW Polo 4)

Airbags are designed to provide additional protection for the driver and passenger in the event of severe frontal and side impacts. They complement the protective functions of seat belts.

The trigger impulse for the airbags to operate is a signal from the impact sensors of the safety system. If the threshold for the airbags to operate is reached during an impact, they instantly inflate, filling the space between the bodies of people and the protruding parts of the passenger compartment.

Immediately after the airbags are deployed, the gas contained in them begins to flow out through the rear openings in the shell. This is intended to avoid obstructing visibility and preventing the driver from acting, as well as to avoid complicating the evacuation of people from the passenger compartment if necessary.

The airbags do not deploy at low decelerations (for example, when braking, even emergency braking) and from weak impacts, when seat belts alone are sufficient to protect people.

The airbags only work when the ignition is on.

Warnings: It is not recommended that the driver and front passenger sit too close to the airbags. Serious injury may occur if the airbag deploys. The manufacturer strongly recommends:

• The driver should sit as far away from the steering wheel as possible, provided, of course, that he/she is still able to control the car.
• The front passenger should sit as far away from the dashboard as possible.
• All occupants of the vehicle must wear seat belts.

Disabling passenger airbags

The front and side airbags for the front passenger can be switched off and on. This is sometimes necessary, for example, if a child seat is attached to the front seat.

To deactivate the passenger airbags, proceed as follows:

• Turn off the ignition.
• Open the glove compartment on the passenger side.
• Turn the airbag switch to the off position using the ignition key (the key slot should be vertical).
• Turn on the ignition and check if the AIRBAG OFF indicator on the control panel is lit.

Turning on the airbags

To activate the passenger airbags, proceed as follows:

• Turn off the ignition.
• Open the glove compartment on the passenger side.
• Using the ignition key, turn the airbag switch to the on position (the key slot should be horizontal).
• Turn on the ignition and check if the AIRBAG OFF indicator on the control panel goes out.
