The engine cooling system is under pressure. The radiator cap with gasket hermetically closes the radiator, but thanks to a specially selected spring built into the cap, if the pressure inside the cooling system rises to 140-180 kPa, the radiator cap opens. The pressure inside the cooling system rises due to the expansion of the coolant, which leads to an increase in the boiling point.

Checking the radiator cap is also carried out using the pressure pump VW1274 (pic. 186).
Screw pump VW1274 to the cover (pic. 186) and increase the pressure with it until the lid opens. The pressure at which the lid should open must be between 140 and 180 kPa. If the value is different, then the radiator cap should be replaced.
